This testing is highly recommended when the following occur:
Head & Neck:
- Swelling in the head (facial, oral, ear, ocular, etc.)
- Head trauma/fracture
- Pituitary tumor
- Nasophareyngeal polyp
- Nasal discharge
- Epistaxis
- Dental disease
- Tympanic bulla evaluation (middle vs. external ear disease distinction)
- Cervical masses (lymph node, thyroid, etc.)
Thorax:
- Lung metastasis check
- Source of pleural effusion
- Source of pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum
- Suspect lung lobe torsion
- Pulmonary masses
- Mediastinal disease/masses
- Staging of thoracic tumors
Abdomen:
- Portosystemic shunts
- Intra-abdominal masses (liver, spleen, adrenal, pancreas, etc.)
- Intravenous urogram for ectopic ureters
- Urethral mass & stones
- Colonic and rectal masses
- Staging of abdominal tumors
Other:
- Elbow dysplasia
- Complicated long bone joint or pelvic fractures
- Spinal fractures/luxations
- Appendicular skeleton mass (muscle, cutaneous, SQ and/or bone)
- Intrapelvic masses (prostate, cervix, vaginal)
- Discospondylitis
- Staging of any tumor
- Angular limb deformities
- When ultrasound is not definitive
